<note>The editors of this volume approached Paul Samuelson during the last year of his life with the suggestion that we might celebrate his unique and influential contributio to the histoery of economic thought by collecting his many papers in this fieldand publishing a selection. It seemed to us that the title of the series for which we perposed our book, "Historical Perspective on Moderns economics" almost exactly described his heuritics intentions in at least the most formal and best-known of his historical studies.</note>
